Obituary of Gladys Mathews

Gladys Estelle Mathews, 101, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2209 in Bedford County Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Robert Elmo Mathews. Born November 21, 1908, in Forest, VA, she was the daughter of the late Henry Jenfer and Julia Catherine Phillips May. She was retired from Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation and a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Farthing and her husband, Wayne, of Forest; one sister, Nancy M. Hunter of Castle Hayne, NC; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert E. Mathews, Jr. and John Henry Mathews; three brothers, Aubrey F. May, Bernice May and Blucher May; one sister, Elsie May and one grandson, Terry Wayne Farthing. A funeral service will be held Friday, July 3, 2009 at 1:00 PM in Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. Randy Kent officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Virginia Memorial Park.
