Obituary of Mary Deans Pague

Mary Elizabeth Deans Pague, 87, of Monroe, Virginia, died Sunday, August 16, 2009, in her home. She was for 65 years the loving wife of James Bogan Pague, Jr. Born May 7, 1922, in Wilmington, North Carolina she was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth and Richard Judson Deans, Sr. Mary spent most of her years in Portsmouth, Virginia, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1939 and a long standing member of Park View Baptist Church . She attended Averitt College, then married Jim on June 27, 1944, and began raising a family. Mary returned to college and received a Bachelors of Education Degree from Old Dominion College (University) in 1965 (at 42!). She taught for 19 years in the City of Portsmouth Public Schools. Jim searched and found a 2nd home near Pleasant View, in the mountains above Lynchburg. In 2000 Mary Elizabeth moved from her beloved Portsmouth to their new home, ?The Pinedarosa?, and soon thereafter became a member of New Prospect Baptist Church. Mary Elizabeth was passionate about church and music, especially singing. She last sang in church in her 80?s. Favorite pastimes included camping and travelling, having visited all 50 of the United States. But no destinations were as special as Cape Hatteras and the Blue Ridge Mountains. In addition to her husband, Mary Elizabeth is survived by her brother, Juddie, daughter Joy (and husband Tyrone), sons, Steven (and wife Lila), Chris (and wife Connie), Tim (and wife Lynn) plus 7 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. There will be a visitation with the family from 10 to 11:30 AM Thursday, August 20, 2009 at New Prospect Baptist Church, 2209 Buffalo Spring Tpke, Monroe, Virginia 24574 (in Pleasant View). A graveside Memorial Service will be conducted at 2 pm Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Fort Hill Memorial Park, 5196 Fort Ave., Lynchburg, Virginia 24502 with Rev. Barry Tucker leading the service. A viewing will be held from 12:30 ? 1:30 at Diuguid Funeral Service, 811 Wiggington Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24502. The family members will receive friends following the memorial service at New Prospect Baptist Church. Diuguid Funeral Services is serving the family.
