Obituary of S. Hobbs

S. Bolling Hobbs, a Lynchburg native and long time attorney died on September 24, 2009. He was born in Lynchburg on June 01, 1919, the son of the late Thomas Gibson Hobbs, and Melville Bolling Hobbs. He was the husband of Katherine Spruce Hobbs for 64 years. Bolling was a graduate of E. C. Glass High School and Lynchburg College. He received his LLB degree from the University of Virginia in 1942: he began practicing law in 1946, after four years of active duty with the U.S. Navy during World War II. While in military service he saw considerable sea duty serving on destroyer escorts in the Atlantic - European - African and Asiatic - Pacific theaters of war. During the weekend of the D-Day invasion, it was his ship that sent men to board and capture the German submarine, U-505, off the coast of Dakar, Africa. Prior to his discharge in 1946, he was serving as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Donneff. Bolling?s father, T. Gibson Hobbs, served as City Attorney for many years, and following in his father?s footsteps, Bolling served as City Attorney from 1950 to 1953. Bolling served as special council to the Lynchburg School Board during many years leading up to and following the integration of the Lynchburg Public Schools. He also did the legal work establishing the Lynchburg Industrial Development Authority and served as its attorney for many years. Bolling was a 60 year member of First Presbyterian Church, having served both as a deacon and elder. An avid golfer, he was a member of Boonsboro Country Club. When he retired from the practice of law, he spent many years building his ?Field of Dreams? golf course at the Lynchburg Camp on the Cowpasture River. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two sisters, Lucy Beverly Hobbs, and Melville Minge Hobbs, and by his two brothers, Thomas Gibson Hobbs, Jr. and Dr. Frank Imboden Hobbs. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Stewart B. Hobbs, Jr. and his wife Brenda, two daughters, Mary H. Bunch and her husband, Ned, and Katherine H Burnett and her husband, David, all of Lynchburg. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Carson H. Sullivan and her husband Jeff, George Bunch, Sarah H. Hoffman and her husband Van, Dabney B. Tally and her husband Aaron, Katherine Stewart Burnett, and Mary Gentry Burnett, and by four great grandchildren: Lyric, Kate, Will, and Tucker. Also, two sister?s in law, Mrs. T. Gibson Hobbs, Jr., and Mrs. James D. Christian, Jr. A graveside service will take place at Spring Hill Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2009, the Reverend John Scholer, presiding.
