Obituary of Elwood Colbert

Elwood Kenneth ?Bud? Colbert Elwood Kenneth Colbert, 86, of Lynchburg died Thursday, January 14, 2010 after a long battle with lymphoma. His beloved wife of 52 years preceded him in death 10 years ago. Born February 9, 1923 in Johnstown, PA he was the son of the late Homer Samuel and Vera Berkebile Colbert. Bud received a BS degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburg in 1943 and upon graduation joined the US Army and was assigned to the Manhattan District Corps of Engineers where he performed highly specialized work on the atomic bomb. Upon discharge he attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology where he pursued a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering. Bud retired in 1996 from Babcox and Wilcox. He was an active member of Brookville Timberlake Lions Club, was past President of Campbell Electoral Board and was past President of the Campbell County Republican Committee. Bud developed the Timberlake Restoration Fund and provided the funds for the Betty Anne Colbert Pavilion. He enjoyed the WMCA Water Aerobics ?Aquabats? three mornings a week. Some of Bud?s quotes and wishes were that the funeral be delayed ?to allow hysteric grief to subside?. He used to jokingly say ? The only good I ever did was to never do anything particularly bad?, and that ? He was revered by his dog that died in 1935, tolerated by his family and acknowledged by the census bureau?. Bud is survived by his 3 children, Gregg Lee Colbert and wife Valerie of Voorhees, NJ, Gary Stewart Colbert of Lynchburg and Susan C. Cash and husband Rick of Richmond and his beloved grand daughters, Leslie Diane Cash Chambliss and husband Kendrick and Ellen Elizabeth Cash all of Richmond. A celebration of Bud?s Life and faith will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Calvary Baptist Church on Timberlake Rd. with the Rev. Louis Beckwith officiating. Entombment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. A reception for family and friends will follow at Grace Restaurant, 2627 Old Forest Rd. After the reception the family will be receiving friends at the residence. A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday, January 22nd from 6-8:00 pm at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Haddon Lions Student Helper Fund.
