Obituary of Robert North

Robert ?Bob? Houston North, 88, of Evington, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010 in Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness . He was the husband of Ruby Yeatts Johnson North for 21 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 41 years, Janet Lindsay North. Born December 2, 1921 in Amherst County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Phillip Eck and Kate Warwick North. Bob was retired from Norfolk- Southern Railway as a conductor after 45 years of service. He was a member of Timberlake United Methodist Church. He proudly served our country during World War II, serving in the European Theatre. Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman and made several trips to Canada and Alaska to hunt and fish. He was the last surviving , active charter member and past president of Mine Bank Hunt Club in Frederick County. Bob was also a lifetime member of the Veteran?s of Foreign Wars. He was also a lifetime member of the United Transportation Union and a member of the Bent Rail Retiree Club. In addition to his wife, Ruby, Bob is survived by two children, Diann North Akin and her husband Sid of St Cloud, FL and Phyllis North Dreist and her husband Rick of Alexandria, VA; one step-son Dr. Dan Johnson and his wife Kathy of Evington; four grandchildren, Robyn Altizer, Robert Akin, Laura and Sarah Dreist; three step-grand-children, Chris Johnson and his wife Dana , Kevin Johnson and Katie Johnson; five great-grandchildren, Amanda, Ashleigh and Brandon Altizer, Kristopher and Sidney Akin; three step grandchuildren, Grace, Jake and Allie Johnson.. Bob was preceded in death by six sisters and five brothers. The family will receive friends Sunday , February 14, 2010 , from 3-5:30 p.m. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 12 Noon in Mt. Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, VA.
