Obituary of Johnnie Pittman

Johnnie Earl Pittman, 73, of Concord passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Jane Taylor Pittman of 52 years. Born February 1, 1937 in Grangeville, Louisiana, he was a son of the late Johnnie E. and Noble Watts Pittman. He was retired from Babcock-Wilcox after 27 years of service. Johnnie proudly served our country in the U. S. Marines Corps. He enjoyed fishing, golf and NASCAR. He was a big fan of The Louisiana. State University Tigers and Va. Tech Hokies football teams. He was a member of the former Old Forest Road Baptist Church. He was the best Husband, Daddy, Granddaddy and friend anyone could ever ask for. In addition to his wife, Jane, Johnnie is survived by his two daughters; Laurie P. Johnson and her husband, Jim and Sheri P. Essex and her husband Mike all of Forest; two sisters, Carolyn Haga and Peggy Mendez both of Texas; five grandchildren, Mandy Essex of Concord, Jillian T. Pittman of Lynchburg, Kayla B. Essex of Forest, Krista J. Lester of Hawaii and Evan Johnson of Forest; a special sister-in-law, Betty Jo Pittman of Lynchburg and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother Jimmie Pittman. Johnnie will be greatly and sadly missed by his family and his many friends, The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr.?s Brady and Headley at the Pearson Cancer Treatment Center and to Hospice of the Hills for their care and concern. The family would like to give a special thank you to Alice Powell, his hospice nurse, who took such remarkable care of him. A celebration of Johnnie?s life and faith will be held Friday, February 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. Bob Davis officiating. The family will receive friend?s Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at Johnnie and Jane?s home in Concord. Interment will be in Virginia Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of the Hills, 3300 Rivermont Ave.., Lynchburg, Va., 24503 or the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C 20004. Diuguid Funeral Service-Waterlick Chapel ( 237-2722 ) is serving the family.
