Obituary of Robert Eagle

Robert Stuart Eagle, Jr. Robert Stuart Eagle, Jr., 84, of Lynchburg passed away at his home Friday, March 26, 2010. Born June 14, 1925 in Lynchburg he was a son of Robert S. Eagle, Sr. and Gladys Davidson Forbes. His brother, Clarence N. Eagle preceded him in death. Mr. Eagle is survived by his wife of 60 years, Faye Thomas Eagle, his four children, Robert S. Eagle, III and wife Cameron of Spotsylvania, Judy E. Shelton and husband Kenny of Forest, Richard T. Eagle and wife Laurie of Troy and Gary S. Eagle of Lynchburg. Mr. Eagle was blessed by five grandchildren, Kayse and Lauren Shelton and Jennifer, Christopher and Allison Eagle. He is also survived by his sisters, Marion E. Brooks and Jean E. Melton and a brother, Roy A. Eagle all of Lynchburg. Several nieces and nephews survive him. Mr. Eagle was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, tht Telephone Pioneers of Virginia and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Eagle served in the US Army Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater during WW II. Assigned to the 1330th AAFBU at Jorhat, India as a flight engineer on B-24 and C-87 aircraft, he flew 68 dangerous missions over the Himalaya Mountains, commonly referred to as the ?Hump? into China to supply General Claire Chenault?s Flying Tigers. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following the war, Mr. Eagle was employed with the C&P Telephone Company from 1947 until his retirement in 1985 from the Bell Atlantic Company. Visitation will be held Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Diuguid Wiggington Chapel from 3-5:00 pm. A celebration of Mr. Eagle?s Life will be held Monday, March 29, 2010 at Centenary United Methodist Church on Rivermont Avenue at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in Presbyterian Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army.
