Obituary of James Conrad

James Gilliam Conrad, 94, of 501 VES Rd. died Friday, August 13, 2010. He was born on September 5, 1915 to the late Dr. and Mrs. Charles E. Conrad of Harrisonburg, VA. Gilliam resided in Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg. He is survived by his wife, Marie ?Patty? Pratt Horine Conrad. A son, James Gilliam Conrad, Jr. and his wife, Jean of Falls Church. A sister, Mrs. Richard A. Jackson of Harrisonburg. Two step sons, Robert Horine and his wife, Cindy of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. and Ronald Conant Horine of Huddleston. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Celeste Goolsby Conrad. A son, Robert Bullington Conrad and a step daughter, Karen Horine Shelton. Mr. Conrad graduated from the University of Virginia in 1937 where he graduated from the law school in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, chiefly in the South Pacific, from 1941 until 1945, and retired as a Lieutenant Commander (reserve). He practiced law in Lynchburg for several years and then became Secretary-Treasurer of the Bottled Gas Co. of Lynchburg, from which he retired when the company was sold. He was former president of the Virginia L-P Gas Association. After he retired he and his wife moved to Irvington, VA. Where they lived until she died in 1980. Later he returned to Lynchburg and lived at Westminster Canterbury where in 2001 he married Patty Horine. He was a former member of Court Street United Methodist Church, The Society of The Cincinnati (VA.) and the Virginia State Bar. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 16, 2010 at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Curtis Harper officiating.
