Obituary of Wanda Brown

Wanda Spencer Brown, 93, of Lynchburg died Sunday, January 9, 2010 at Westminster Canterbury after several months of declining health. Born, February 3, 1917, in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late John Kilpen Spencer, Jr. and the late Letticia Womeldorf Spencer. She was married on April 19, 1941 to the late Robert Wilmot Brown, Sr. and was married for 41 years. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard H. Stoakley of Danville and her husband, Richard. Two sons, Robert Wilmot Brown, Jr. and his wife, Betty of Oriental, NC and Donald Grady Brown of Weddington, NC. In addition, she is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Weisy Roberts, Mrs. Donald E. Leech, Mrs. Lionel P. Harrison and Ms. Martha Spencer and four brothers, Mr. Sterling W. Spencer, The Rev. Dr. James B. Spencer, Mr. Maxwell C. Spencer and Mr. Thomas C. Spencer. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. Earl Cook and two brothers, Mr. John Kilpen Spencer, III and Mr. Joseph Womeldorf Spencer. Mrs. Brown graduated from E.C. Glass High School and Madison College in Harrisonburg, Va. She taught high school Chemistry in Harrisonburg, VA. and later managed the Congressional Cafeteria in Washington, DC. She was a Charter Member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg; where she taught kindergarten and served on many committees. She was a former member of the Timbrook Women?s Club, her local garden club and any other community activates. Her interests were in gardening, needlework and bridge. A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. David Ethridge officiating.
