Obituary of Gladys Thomas

Gladys Virginia Thomas, 98, of Lynchburg passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born May 6, 1912 in Richmond, Va. she was a daughter of the late James Edward Johns and Mary Lewis Johns and was the wife of the late, Thomas J. Thomas. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis E. Johns. Gladys was a faithful member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church since 1924 having served in many capacities of her church. After graduating from high school, Gladys attended Lynchburg College. She also attended Central Virginia Community College to complete the Professional Standards Program Certification of Educational Secretaries. In 1978 she was voted ?Secretary of the Year? by the Virginia Association Educational Secretaries. She retired as administrative secretary of the Lynchburg School System after 26 years of service. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, J.C. Thomas and Bobby of Richmond, Va.; one grandson, John M. Thomas of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Nellie J. Davis; one brother, Harry E. Johns; four nephews, Harry, Jr., Lou, Jr., Jim and David Johns; three nieces, Mary Lew Bergman, Margaret Ann Todd and Vickie Morgan; four great-nieces and nine great-nephews. In lieu of flowers consider West Lynchburg Baptist Church at 3031 Memorial Ave., Lynchburg, Va. 24501 or your favorite charity. A celebration of Gladys? life will be conducted 10:00 AM Friday, February 18, 2011 at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. James D. Newman officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
