Obituary of Lucille Austin

Lucille Reid Austin, 94, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born on September 17, 1916, in Campbell County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Mazie Roakes Reid. An active member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church for more than sixty years, Mrs. Austin served as an officer of Presbyterian Women, Women?s Circle chair, Sunday School Teacher and Primary Department superintendent, and Vacation Bible School teacher. Along with her late husband, she prepared the elements for the Lord?s Supper for many years. She was retired as the office secretary for the Communications Workers of America, Local 2203. Mrs. Austin was admired by all who knew her for her kind and gentle nature and her devotion to her family, church, and friends. She was an avid reader, enjoying two to three books a week until the end of her life. A woman of many talents and interests, she especially enjoyed flowers and classical and sacred music. She was a perfectionist in all of her endeavors, as evidenced by her skills as a seamstress and the meals she lovingly prepared. Surviving are her daughter, Carolyn Austin Eubank and her husband Robert, of Lynchburg; a grandson, Stephen Reid Eubank and his wife Rebecca, of Amherst, Virginia, and a granddaughter, Laura Eubank Harman and her husband Gregory, of Lindenhurst, Illinois; five great-grandchildren: Emma and Ainsley Eubank and Reid, Ian, and Spencer Harman; a sister, Nancy Jacobs, of Newport News, Virginia; a step-sister, Grey Williams, of Altavista, Virginia; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-six years, Frank Edward Austin; two sisters, Bernice Shields and Marion Williams; two brothers, Gordon and Kenneth Reid; and a step-mother, Ella Reid. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Diuguid Funeral Home on Timberlake Road on Sunday, May 15, 7? 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church on Monday, May 16, at 2 p.m., with the Reverend Luke Farwell officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. A reception will be held at the church after the burial.
