Obituary of Marshall Schmitt

Marshall Elwood Schmitt, 77, of Lynchburg, passed from his earthly life to his heavenly home Wednesday, June 8, 2011. He was the devoted husband of Virginia Heath Schmitt for 57 years Born June 4, 1934, in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Elwood Julius and Hazel Reynolds Schmitt. He was retired owner and operator of Marshall Schmitt Grading, which continues to be operated by his sons. He was a long time and active member of Marsh Memorial United Methodist Church. Marshall loved to grow vegetables , coon hunt and play softball. He especially loved being with his family and working with his sons, which brought him great joy. In addition to his wife, Virginia, he is survived by three sons, Marshall Elwood Schmitt, Jr. and his wife, Teresa, Joseph C. Schmitt and his wife, Janice and Franklin D. Schmitt and his wife Kelly, all of Lynchburg; two brothers, Artie Lewis Schmitt and his wife Christine, James ?Jimmy? Stanley Schmitt and his wife Joan, all of Lynchburg; two sisters, Peggy S. Shelton and her husband Harold of Lynchburg, Julia S. Garbee and her husband, Clyde of Forest; seven grandchildren, Jason Schmitt, April Schmitt, Jennifer Schmitt, Shannon S. Colbird and her husband, Timmy, Jacob D. Schmitt, Jessica S. Tucker and her husband, Jonathon and Morgan E. Schmitt; three great-grandchildren, Nevaeh Schmitt, Timothy Gus Colbird and Kenleigh Jo Tucker; one sister-in-law Ruth Schmitt . He was preceded in death by a son, Grover C. Schmitt and his wife, Linda and a brother Earl Thomas Schmitt. A celebration of Marshall?s life and faith will be held Friday, June 10, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Marsh Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Harlow officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8:30 at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Marsh Memorial United Methodist Church-Roof Fund, 20348 Leesville Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24502. Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory-Waterlick Chapel, 237-2722, is serving the family.
