Obituary of Richard Wilson

Richard Burton (Dick) Wilson, 89, of Lynchburg, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy McFaden Wilson and a son, Timothy Burton Wilson. Born in Lynchburg on September 10, 1921, he was a lifelong resident of the city except for the time spent in civilian support and then active duty in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of Inglewood Baptist Church. With a passion for the construction business, he was a Project Superintendent for the construction of many local buildings and was active in bridge construction in the city area and in the building of interstate 81 in Virginia. Some of his projects included the initial restoration of the Lynchburg Court House, 14 bridges on interstate 81, local homes, banks, industrial buildings and bridges and his own home which he constructed. He retired from C. L. Lewis and Co. He was interested in the details of the business and liked to discuss challenges that the work presented. With an interest in family and the outdoors, he was a charter member of the Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg and served on the Board of Directors, several committees and as Chapter President. As an excellent shooter, he enjoyed many afternoons of skeet and trap with the companionship of his fellow outdoorsmen as a high point of his week. An avid trout fisherman, he was disappointed if he did not catch his legal limit each day. Even if that was the case, he would put his Stetson hat on and return the next day to the streams and the friends he made in the sport. As a grower of tomatoes, he took pleasure in working the soil and in sharing the crop with his friends and neighbors. In the winter he shared pecan pies baked with his wife's pirated recipe. He was a teacher of construction, fishing, shooting, gardening, family and living a good life. He is survived by a son, John Richard Wilson and his wife Dale of Abingdon, Va., a daughter - in - law Linda Wilson of Spartanburg, SC, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
