Obituary of Frank Wilkerson

Frank Gilmore Wilkerson Frank G. Wilkerson, 91, died on July 1, 2011 at the Medical Care Center in Lynchburg, VA. He was born on November 25, 1919 in Albemarle County. He was the youngest and last surviving son of Fannie Emmis Madison & Wesley Jack Wilkerson. Frank proudly served in the US Army from 1942-1946 and was stationed in Manila for most of his service career. After returning to Lynchburg, and using his skills acquired in the Army, he was employed by George W. Fix, Inc. home building company. He was a skillful and accomplished builder and was very proud of the many custom homes he helped build in the Lynchburg community. After his retirement he was employed by Hillcrest Apartments, where he lived, as a resident carpenter. At his residence he acquired many friendships and was always generous in helping others, whether delivering meals or doing building projects for his friends. Frank was a past member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church and most recently a member of Park View Methodist Church until he was unable to attend. He is survived by his baby sister, Mary Elizabeth Wood, of Charlottesville, VA; his advocate/caretaker and niece, Virginia Fitzgerald Hubbard (Bill) as well as other nieces; Brenda Fitzgerald Thorp (Butch), Helen Lancaster, and nephews, Brad Fitzgerald (Linda), Russell Lancaster (Ann), Danny Lancaster (Pat), and Edward Wood. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers: Willie R. ?Bill? Wilkerson, James Ellis Wilkerson, Russell McKinley Wilkerson, and his sisters: Doris Annie Owen, Cora Lee Fitzgerald, Gertie May Lancaster, and Armetta ?Nancy? Brandt. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 5, at 1:00 PM, at Spring Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided by his comrades with the American Legion Post 16 The family would like to thank the Medical Care Center doctors, nurses and staff for their care of Frank and Hospice of the Hills for their excellent support, visitation and care after he became ill. Special thanks to Patricia Carter, whom Frank was so fond of for her dependable visits and compassionate friendship.
