Obituary of Elizabeth Campbell

Elizabeth Gilliam Campbell, 100, of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 in Bowie, Maryland. She was the widow of Roland Alvin Campbell. Born October 15, 1910 near Pamplin, VA, she was a daughter of the late Charles Bruce and Mary Alleta Reynolds Gilliam. She was educated in the Prince Edward County School system and after graduation, she attended Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University) and thereafter completed her nursing education at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She later took additional training in Richmond and Morristown, NJ and became a nurse anesthetist and practiced at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She later worked for a local physician (Dr. Morrison) and subsequently provided nursing care on a private basis. Mrs. Campbell was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Wesleyan Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Suburban Women?s Club, Lynchburg Garden Club and the Needlework Guild of America where she served as treasurer for over 20 years. She loved working with flowers and sharing them with others. Mrs. Campbell is survived by her son, John Charles Campbell and his wife, Linda, of Lynchburg; one daughter, Jeanne Clark Kline of Bowie , MD; four grandchildren, Thomas Joseph Kline and Elizabeth Mary Kline Leagan and her husband Robert, all of Maryland, John Charles Campbell, Jr. and his wife, Terri, of Woods Cross, Utah and Leigh Paige Campbell of Richmond, VA.; 10 great-grandchildren; 5 dear nieces and nephews, Mary Florence Gilliam Younger and her husband Ron, Linda Bruce Gilliam Wooldridge and her husband Cecil, Kay Gilliam Settle and her husband Jim, May Gilliam Taylor and her husband Geoff, and David Brooks Gilliam and his wife, Cheryl. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Wiley E. Gilliam, Charles Bruce Gilliam and Frank W. Gilliam and a half-sister, Mabel Celesta Wilkerson Floyd and a half-brother, Laurence Gilliam. A celebration of Mrs. Campbell?s life and faith will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Ecklund and Rev. Douglas Pillow officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 1501 Rivermont Ave., Lynchburg, VA 24503.
