Obituary of Sue Nichols

Sue Thompson Nichols, 69, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Greensboro, NC on October 7, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Clyde M. Thompson and Eula Fitzgerald Thompson and was the wife of Albert (Al) L. Nichols, Jr., for 45 happy years. She was dedicated to her Lord, to her church, to her family, and to her friends. She always tried to do what was right. She had a special love for children and loved teaching her Children?s Sunday School class. Sue loved her seven grandchildren so much and was especially proud of them. Sue graduated from the Woman?s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and taught elementary school in Winston-Salem, NC; Virginia Beach; and Adak, Alaska as well as being a substitute teacher for many years at Leesville Road Elementary School in Campbell County. She was an active member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church serving the church in many capacities. She was a deacon, the Children?s Department Sunday School Director and teacher for 40 years up to her death, the Wedding Coordinator, and a representative to the Lynchburg Baptist Association (LBA) for many years. She especially enjoyed directing a Rivermont area mission program - The Clothes Closet. She also was a Woman?s Missionary Union (WMU) circle member participating in many special mission projects in the Lynchburg area. Sue served as director and teacher for the LBA English as a Second Language (ESL) Progam and had done so for 15 years. In addition to her husband, Al, she is survived by a son, Dr. Stephen A. Nichols, and his wife, Gerri A., of Towson, MD; a daughter, Diane N. Reid, and her husband, William J., of Midlothian; seven grandchildren, Benjamin Reid, Samuel Reid, Elijah Reid, Lydia Reid, Philip Nichols, Daniel Nichols, and Julia Nichols; a sister, Betty T. Crow, of Greenville, SC; a brother-in-law, Frank A. Nichols, of Forest; a nephew, Ken Crow, of Pinehurst, NC; two nieces, Kathy Farren, of Pinehurst, NC and Karen Deaton of Greenville, SC. Sue is also survived by the many friends in her golf, tennis, bridge, and needle point groups as well as the friends in her neighborhood and in her church. A celebration of Sue's life and her faith will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 10, 2011, at Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Glen Land officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 9, 2011 from 3 to 5 PM at Diuguid Wiggington Chapel. A reception for family and friends will be held at the church following the interment.
