Obituary of Lawrence Mehaffey

Lawrence Pinkney Mehaffey, 86, of Lynchburg passed away unexpectedly Thursday, November 29, 2011 at Runk & Pratt ?Smith Mountain Retirement Facility. He was the husband of the late Roberta?Bobbie? Keyser Mehaffey. Born November 3, 1925 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Thomas Pinkney and Mary Morris Mehaffey. Lawrence was a life- long and active member of Centenary United Methodist Church and retired from the United States Postal Service after 39 years of service, mainly having served at the 24503 Rivermont Station. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during World War II on the US Hornet and received a commendation for his quick actions in catching (with a second arresting gear cable) a landing aircraft that missed the first arresting cable and saved the entire ship from damage and loss of life. Lawrence was a very kind and loving gentleman who loved life completely. He was well known for his nature to help his family and friends.. He especially loved to shop with his wife, ?Bobbie?, at the various beaches that he visited. He and his loving wife loved to play the small golf courses (Par 3 and miniature). He maintained a beautiful home and garden. Lawrence loved all children and especially his own. He loved spending time at their Saturday night suppers, birthdays, holidays and beach vacations. He was much loved by his long-time customers at the Rivermont Post Office. They often brought him gifts of cakes, pies and other gifts for his kindness that he always extended to others. He was so well loved by all that knew him. He was an ?angel on earth?. Lawrence is survived by his daughter, Gay Lynn Mehaffey Brown of Lynchburg and his son, Thomas Pinkney Mehaffey of Roanoke, VA ; in-laws, W.P and Beth Ellis, Vickie Mehaffey Brandt and Annie Mehaffey, Bert and Eleanor Keyser and numerous loving and caring nieces and nephews. Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. A celebration of Lawrence?s life will be held Friday, December 2, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Ecklund and Rev. C. Douglas Pillow officiating. The family will receive friends today from 7-8:00 PM at the funeral home. Military honors will be provided by Lynchburg?s American Legion Post-16 at the church. Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory-Wiggington Road Chapel, 385-8900, is serving the family.
