Obituary of Miller Boord

Philip Miller Boord, 501 V.E.S. Road, Lynchburg, Virginia, died on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. A son of the late Mary Pauline Miller and Harry J. Boord, he was born February 16, 1910, in Danville, Illinois. Mr. Boord was graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1933. Later he earned graduate and professional degrees from the George Peabody College for Teachers and the Peabody Library School in Nashville. In the 1970s Peabody College merged with Vanderbilt University. He was Librarian Emeritus of Randolph-Macon Woman?s College; former Adjunct Professor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois; Public Librarian at Mason City Public Library in Mason City, Iowa; and Librarian with the Illinois State Library in Springfield, Illinois. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Boord served in the South Pacific. He was a resident of Lynchburg for nearly half a century and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Mr. Boord was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Romig Boord; a sister, Ellen Boord Howrey of Crawfordsville, Indiana; a niece, Mari Anne Parker of Huntingburg, Indiana; and two nephews, Charles Mace Davison of Boulder, Colorado, and E. Philip Howrey of Boulder, Colorado. He is survived by two nieces, Sue Drews of East Moline, Illinois, and Sara P. Howrey of Highland Heights, Kentucky, and a nephew, Richard B. Howrey of Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews. No visitation is scheduled. A private memorial Mass will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Lynchburg. Interment will be at Spring Hill Cemetery, 301 East Voorhees, Danville, Illinois. Diuguid Funeral Service, 811 Wiggington Road, Lynchburg, Virginia 24502, is serving the family.
