Virginia Settle

Obituary of Virginia Settle

Virginia Wilson Ware Settle of Lynchburg, the heart and light of our family, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Centra Hospice House, Lynchburg. Born at home in Pera, Amherst County, on June 5, 1918, she was the youngest child of the late Charlie Moses Thomas Daniel Ware and Malissa Frances Bibb Ware. Virginia was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Edward Settle, Sr., in 1986. She and Ed were married for 47 years, having shared in the births and raising of five children. Their life together was a thoroughly joyful partnership. Virginia was the youngest of eleven children, having 5 sisters and 5 brothers. Now all are together again, in the comfort of the Lord. She grew up in Pera and came to Lynchburg at age 18, graduated from Phillips Business College, worked in the office at Central Virginia Training Center, married Ed in 1939 and soon started their family. Later, she helped manage J. E. Settle Plumbing and Heating. In 1950 they started their rental properties business, working side by side refurbishing and maintaining the properties. Virginia was a gentle, kind, respectful and loving soul, fervently devoted to caring for and raising her family. Her memory will always be deeply treasured by her 5 children and their spouses: James Edward Settle, Jr. (and deceased wife Judith Emily Fleck Settle), Nancy Carroll Settle Moore and James Henry Moore, Vincent David Settle, Sr. and Mildred Jean Loving Settle, Sarah Frances Settle Ostler and Phillip Donald Ostler, Virginia Rosalie Settle Gowen and Jerry Dale Gowen. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and their spouses: Kevyn Settle, Jacob Settle and Erin Valorose Settle, Patrick Settle and Terry Whitman Settle, Michael Settle, Paul Moore, David Settle and Crystal Davis Settle, Tracy Settle Martin and Jeff Martin, Kimberly Settle Cosner and Sean Cosner, Elizabeth Ostler Danielson and Randy Danielson, Deborah Ostler Ericson and Chris Ericson, Rebekah Ostler Philipp and Andrew Philipp, Matthew Ostler and Melissa Gowen Goodrich. Of 22 great-grandchildren, one passed as an adored baby. Virginia?s immediate family and other loving relatives and friends will miss her big smile and the magnificent warmth of her wonderful embrace. Our feelings of loss are somewhat eased by knowing she will always be in our hearts. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Michael Diminick and his associates, and to the Centra Specialty Hospital and Centra Hospice House for their loving care during the past month. The family will receive friends Friday evening June 15th, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Duiguid Wiggington Road Chapel. A celebration of Virginia?s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16th at Diuguid Wiggington Road Chapel. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.
