Obituary of Gordon Hicks

Gordon West Hicks, 86, of Evington passed away Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Runk & Ptratt Nursing Care Facility. He was the husband of Evelyn Harris Hicks for 63 years. Born April 7, 1926 in Harlan County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Edward Thomas Hicks and Eva Beck Hicks. He was owner of Buffalo Creek Dairy Farm and New London Auto Parts. He as a charter member of Saint Andrew Presbyterian Chuurch where he previously served on the deacon board. He was also a charter member of the Timberlake Lions Club and a member of Moose Lodge # 1727. Mr. Hicks served in the United States Army in General George Patton's 3rd Army. Mr. Hicks received the Jaycees "Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1958. He decided early in his life that farming was what he wanted as a career. He attended the University of Weilhenstedhen A&T School in Germany, Lincoln Memorial University at Harrigate,TN and graduated from VPI (VaTech)with a degree in animal husbandry. He is survived by his wife Evelyn; one daughter, Susan Hicks Johnston and her husband, Martin, of Glen Allen, VA; one son Gordon West Hicks, Jr.and his wife Wanda, of Evington; two grandchildren, Adam L.Johnstonn and Wyatt E. Johnston and two very special friends John and Gina Hatcher. A graveside service will be held Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 10:00 AM in Fort Hill Memorial Park with the Rev.Dr. Chuck Willoughby officiating. A memorial service will be at the church at a later date. Viewing will be at Diuguid Waterlick Chpael Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. No formal family gathering or visitation is scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church-Building Fund, 21206 Timberlake Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24502. Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory-Waterlick Chapel, 237-2722, is serving the family.
