Obituary of Rachel Guthrie

Rachel Harper Guthrie, 94, of Lynchburg, joined her beloved husband, Jesse Vaden ?Gus? Guthrie , Friday, March 8, 2013. Born September 11, 1918 in the ?Harpers Mill? area of Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Luther Leslie Harper and Lula Elder Harper. She reminisced fondly of her years living in the rural country. Her vivid memories of the mill and the activities on the farm gave her much delight to tell; some of which include her narrow escape from drowning at an early age in the mill pond (?Community swimming hole?), swimming, fishing and ice skating on the frozen water that was saved in the ice house to cool the drinks during the hot summer months and the mischief of she and her six siblings. A very young relative once told her that her stories sounded like days of Mark Twain. She attended Hat Creek Elementary School and later graduated from Naruna High School (now William Campbell H.S.). In her youth she was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Hat Creek, VA. She graduated from Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She retired after thirty-three years of continual and dedicated service in numerous capacities and positions during her nursing career. Rachel was a long time active member of Inglewood Baptist Church where she attended FAITH-FULL-LY. She is survived by two sisters, Gretchen and Juanita; a special niece, Debi Ballowe and great- nephew Heath Ballowe; a great niece, Kiristy Deblock; three great-great nieces and nephews, Caleb Vaden Deblock, Erika Ann Deblock and Alexis Raquel Deblock. She was proceeded in death by four brothers, Earl, Royal, Waverly ?Cate? and Elder ?Dick? Harper. A celebration of Rachel?s life and faith will be held Monday, March 11, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Inglewood Baptist Church with Pastor Kathy Nicholls officiating. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will return to the church after the burial for a lunch and fellowship time. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3-5 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Inglewood Baptist Church, 4830 Old Boonsboro Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24503. Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory- Wiggington Road Chapel, 385-8900, is serving the family.
