Obituary of William Powers Ferrell

William Powers Ferrell, 89, of Big Island, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013 at The Summit after an extended illness. He was the husband of Dorothy R. Ferrell for 63 years. Born March 24, 1924 in Amherst County, he was a son of the late Robert Stokes Ferrell and Janet Amonette Ferrell. He was retired vice-president of C.B. Fleet Corporation after 33 years of service. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees. He received a B.S. degree in Biology from Lynchburg College and a Master's degree in Biology from The University of Virginia. He was also a former member of the Lynchburg Rotary Club. In addition to his wife Dorothy, he is survived by two daughters, Mary Ferrell of Fredricksburg, VA and Martha F. Davis and her husband, Daniel, of Big Island, VA; four grandchildren, Melanie R. Cheripka and Michael T. Raphael, both of Fredricksburg, Jeremy S. Davis and his wife, Becky, of Big Island and Stephanie A. Davis of Lynchburg; eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, William P. Ferrell, Jr. and one grandson, William D. Davis and two brothers, Palmore Ferrell and Robert Ferrell, Jr.. A funeral service will be held Monday, August 5, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Diuguid Wiggington Road Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Edwin Clever and Rev. Douglas Pillow officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 PM at the funeral home.
