Obituary of Joseph White McCarthy

Joseph White McCarthy, Jr. died peacefully Nov 25th 2015 at Lynchburg General Hospital surrounded by his family. Born July 19th, 1931 in Lynchburg, VA, he was the son of the late Alma Walker and Joseph White McCarthy, Sr. He was predeceased in death by his beloved son, Joseph White McCarthy, III. He is survived by his wife Langhorne Lewis McCarthy to whom he married 59 years ago on June 23rd, 1956. He leaves behind to cherish his memory two sons and two daughters, Charles Lewis McCarthy, his wife Beth Ann, of Midlothian, VA, John Thomas McCarthy, and his wife Jennifer, of Lynchburg, VA. Langhorne McCarthy Stinnette, and her husband, Wade, of Columbia, SC, and Laura Alma McCarthy and her fiancé Dale Holland of Charlotte, NC. He is survived by nine grandchildren, Langhorne Stinnette Stevens, and her husband Will of Columbia, SC, Kathryn Chafee Stinnette of Greenville SC, William Walker Stinnette of Columbia, SC, Charles Lewis McCarthy, Jr. of Richmond VA, Caroline Rose McCarthy and Meredith Patricia McCarthy, of Midlothian, VA, John Thomas McCarthy, Jr of Columbia, SC, Robert Huntley McCarthy and Virginia Lewis McCarthy of Lynchburg, VA. He is also survived by his sister, Ann McCarthy Goddard of Richmond, VA, sister in law, Helen Lewis Holt of Lynchburg, VA and five nieces and five nephews. Joe graduated from the old E.C. Glass high school in 1948, and Virginia Military Institute class of 1952. He served as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division stationed at Ft. Campbell Ky. After completing his military service, he returned to Lynchburg and worked as a salesman for the Lynchburg Foundry for eight years. He then joined Taylor Ramsey Corporation in 1965 as a salesman and eventually became a vice president where he served until his retirement in 2008. Joe was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, and served on the Vestry as Senior Warden twice and Chairman of two large Capital Campaigns. He was Sunday School Superintendent for four years, and taught Sunday school for 30 years. Joe's dedication to his community included Board service on the following Boards - Chairman of James River Day School, Sandusky, VMI Alumni Association, Westminster Canterbury Board of Trustees, and Chairman of the Westminster Canterbury Foundation, which he helped to establish. Joe cherished his family, church, friends, and the special bond with his VMI Brother Rats. He was unwavering in his choice to always do what was right, just and fair. He placed the importance of family, church, and friends as his number one priority and as a result had a meaningful impact on the lives of all those around him. The family will receive visitors at Westminster Canterbury Friday, Dec. 11th, from 5pm - 7pm. A celebratory service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, December 12th,, 2015 at St. John's Episcopal Church at 200 Boston Ave. A reception will follow after the service in Magill Hall. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank all of Westminster Canterbury's Health Care Staff for their professional care, concern, cheerfulness and attention while residing at Westminster Canterbury.
