Obituary of Florence DeFord

Florence Burks DeFord, 82, of Lynchburg died Sunday, February 24, 2008 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late William Henry DeFord, Sr. Born September 6, 1925 on the family farm in Appomattox County she was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Lizzie Shepherd Burks. She was former owner and operator of Madisonville General Store along with her husband Billy. She was former post mistress in Madisonville and a member of Madisonville Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by five brothers, Strode, Jack, Charles "Little Boogie", Robert Twyman, and Tom Burks; four sisters, Alice "Sister" Sarver, Amorette "Tootsie" Johnson, Texie Pillow and Dorothy Bingham. Florence is survived by her son, William H. "Pete" DeFord, Jr. and wife Carol of Lynchburg, her brother, Baynard "Red" Burks of Tyler, Texas; three grandchildren, Brian DeFord of Chesterland, Ohio, Xan DeFord of Lynchburg, Andrew DeFord and wife Heather of Forest and seven great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, 1:00 pm in the mausoleum chapel at Fort Hill Memorial Park. Diuguid Wiggington Chapel is in charge of arrangements. .
