Obituary of Bettie Harris

Bettie Pierson Harris, 86, of Lynchburg, passed away, Friday, May 2, 2008 at the Carrington, where she made her home for the last 8 years. Born May 21, 1922 in New Port Richie, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Alva Melbourne and Elsie Noble Pierson. A June 10, 1940 graduate of E.C. Glass High School, she married the late Clayton A. Harris on May 31, 1941 in Richmond, Virginia. She was a member of Forest Road United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Guild Circle and for many years a teacher of the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class. Bettie was retired from the physical therapy Department of Central Virginia Training Center. She was a very artistic person; painting, sewing and gardening were her pleasures. Bettie was predeceased by her sister, Aliene P. Parker of Lynchburg, her half-sisters, Helen Ellis and Bonita Swafford of Illinois. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Edith H. Callahan of Lynchburg and nieces and nephews, Joan F. Burnham, Patsy G. Dalton, , Ethel Mae Harris, Bobby Harris, Jimmy Harris, Gene Allen Harris, Judy Stanley, Steve Allen Harris, Melvin Parker, Clifton Swafford and Helen Ann Guthrie. The family would like to thank the staff at the Carrington for the love and care shown to Bettie during her stay. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 5, 2008 at 1:00 PM in Forest Road United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Kinnard officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and at others times at the home of Edith Callahan, 114 Hollywood Drive, Lynchburg. Entombment will be in Virginia Memorial Park. Memorial contributions, in Bettie's name, may be made to Forest Road United Methodist Church, 2805 Forest Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24501. Diuguid Funeral Service-Wiggington Chapel (434-385-8900) is serving the family.
