Obituary of Jessie Clark Askew

Jessie Louise Clark Askew passed away Friday, June 13, 2008 at the home of her daughter, Ava Campbell after a short illness. She was Born May 14, 1937 in Dallas, TX to Robert and Vivian Clark and was the widow of John Wesley Askew. Jessie was an active member of Evington United Methodist Church where she served on many committees and sang in the choir. She was a Certified Lay Speaker and served on the board of Church and Society of the Lynchburg District and Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, responsible for planning the annual Peace and Justice Breakfast for the Conference. She served the District United Methodist Women as president and communications coordinator as well as serving as communication coordinator for the Virginia Conference United Methodist Women. She was active in the Lynchburg Central Virginia Emmaus Community serving on the Board of Directors, including a term as president. She served in various positions on several Emmaus Teams and was Lay Director of Walk #34. She also served on Epiphany teams in various positions. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Bobbie Sue Clark Niles. She is survived by two sons, John Askew and his wife Lorraine of Huddleston and Anthony Askew and his wife, Pernilla of Tequesta, FL. A daughter, Ava Campbell and her husband, Tim of Forest. Eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Two sisters, Janice Clark Fitzgerald and her husband, Geoffrey of Boston, Mass. and Betty Clark Hunley and her husband, Gary of Altavista and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 PM at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, June 16, 2008 at Evington United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Franklin and the Rev. Riley Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Park View United Methodist Church Wednesday night meals, C/O Sue Spencer, Lynchburg District United Methodist Church, 20348-A Leesville Rd., Lynchburg, Va. 24502.
