Obituary of Ruby Yeatts Johnson North

Ruby Yeatts Johnson North, 94, of Evington, VA. passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024 surrounded by her family.

 

Born on July 2, 1929 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Lora Yeatts.

 

Twice married, she was the wife of the late John Daniel Johnson Jr. for 32 years and her second husband of 22 years, the late Robert Houston North.

 

She was a 1947 graduate of Brookville High School where she played on the varsity basketball and volleyball teams in her junior and senior years. She was an avid reader, enjoyed classical and gospel music, and was a Virginia Tech football fan.

 

Ruby loved God, her family, church, and country. She prayed daily the verse from II Chronicles 7:14 “if my people, who are called by name will humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

 

She was a long-term member of Timberlake Baptist Church and the Maranatha Sunday School class. She worked in the advertising department of Millner’s department store, which later become Miller and Roads, and later worked for Southern Railway/Norfolk and Southern as a ticket clerk at the Kemper Street Station, and then as a clerk operator at the Montview Yard office until her retirement in 1990.

 

Surviving her is her son and daughter-in law, Drs. John Daniel Johnson III and Kathy of Evington; three grandchildren, Christopher Johnson and wife Dana, Kevin Johnson, all of Richmond, and Kaitlyn Johnson of Lynchburg; three great grandchildren Grace, Jake, and Allie Johnson of Richmond; stepdaughters, Diane North Akins, (Sydney) and Phyllis North Driest, (Rick); a number of step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.

 

Also surviving are sister Rebecca Yeatts Mack (Greg), brother-in-law John P. Stephens, and sister-in-law Aida Yeatts, and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

Ruby was preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Cofer, Clara McCormick, Evelyn Scott, and Loreen Stephens; brothers Bernard Yeatts, Clarence Yeatts, and James Yeatts.

 

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Diuguid Funeral Service & Cremator, Timberlake Road, Lynchburg from 6 – 8 p.m.

 

A celebration of Ruby’s life will be conducted on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, in the chapel of Diuguid Funeral Service & Cremator, Timberlake Road, Lynchburg at 11am. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

 

Memorials consider Timberlake Baptist Church, Allow the Children, or a charity of choice.
