Obituary of James Jessie Dowdy

James Jessie “Pete” Dowdy, 76, of Lynchburg, Va, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023, after an extended illness. He was the husband of Maryann Lacks Dowdy for 53 years. 

Born September 15, 1947, in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Mabel Short Dowdy. Pete was a retired welder with BWXT for 43 years. He loved blue grass music and fishing. 

In addition to his wife, Maryann, he is survived by one son, Troy Thomas Dowdy of Lynchburg; a daughter, Angela D. Coleman (Monty); five grandchildren, Zach Coleman (Madison) Dakota Dowdy, Chase Coleman (Fiancé, Logan), Tabitha Dowdy and Hailey Coleman; two great grandchildren, Everly and Harper Coleman. He is also survived by his fur baby, “Checkers.” 

The family wishes to thank Amber Dowdy and Vickie Litchford for their wonderful and dedicated care that they gave to Pete. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Assocation. 

A funeral service will be held Friday, November 10, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with Pastor Mike Dodson officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6-8 P.M. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
