Betty Compton

Obituary of Betty Smith Compton

Betty Smith Compton, loving wife, sweetheart and lifelong companion of her husband, Alfred Lee Compton for 70 years, departed this world on June 5, 2023, to her eternal Father, Jesus Christ.

Born in Lynchburg on November 8, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Hiram Luther and Katie Smith; sister of Judy Whitmore, Kitty Shelton and the late June Harris and a brother, H.L. Smith.

She and Alfred were lifelong sweethearts, having met when they were 13 years old in November of 1948. They knew then that they would always be together as one.

They were married in Lynchburg on December 22, 1953, after Alfred had returned from Korea while serving with the United States Army. They would travel many roads and countries throughout the next 18 years, wherever the Army sent them until his retirement in 1971.She is also survived by 3 lovely daughters, Sheryle Blim, Carolyn Beck and Karen Reid, who in turn gave them 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. She loved them more than they will ever know.

Her love for Alfred was uncomparable. She gave her heart and soul. She raised her family almost single handedly as the Army kept them separated from time to time.

Her passion was in making porcelain dolls, which she was an expert at. She was a skilled seamstress, financier, fabulous cook and mother. But her heart was always with Alfred. Always hand in hand throughout their life. Their lives being very private.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3-5 at the funeral home. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, June12, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. Harry Wonderland officiating. Entombment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
