Marty was friend in a more extraordinary way than most people. He befriended our Special needs daughter and mentored her as a volunteer at Downtown YMCA which led to her being employed part time there for 10 years. This was one of her happiest achievements in her life. Very few people will give of their time and interest to those with disability. Marty and Debbie became close friends over the years to us.Marty was 1 in a million and will be remembered forever.Jim and Kathy Beck Amherst,Va.

As a Y member, Marty was the smiling face I saw every morning and followed by some "upbeat" comment about local and world events. Years later he help me write every name (276) on a 2" x 12" card that is engraved on Monument Terrace honoring the fallen for a ceremony I planned that year in front of the Dough Boy, which I saved and in safe keeping.
Marty as a Vietnam era Veteran I salute you with this quote and tonight I will turn down an empty glass. Slow Salute.
"We have an old tradition I believe to be Service wide, it's one that salutes our brothers who have passed to the other side. A single rose by a turn down glass resides at the table's end, a tiny bit of nostalgia and a tribute to absent friends. Each in his turn will look that way and each with his cup a brim, each will remember a fellow Veteran, as there's Frank, Joe or Ed. There are those names that escape us and those we can't recall, long history dims identity, but we drink to them one and all. When my earthly life is over and to the table's end I pass, future Veterans will remember and turn down an empty glass."

I attended Rivermont Presbyterian as a kid and Marty was my boys Sunday School teacher. There’s one memory of Marty that sticks out in my mind the most. When I was a teenager my father had moved overseas, where he would remain for all of my time in high school. Shortly after my father left, my Boy Scout troop hosted a father-son campout and I remember locking myself in my bedroom and crying as I was reminded that I was the only troop member who’s dad wasn’t around. One day my mother came to me and said that somehow or other, Marty had heard about my situation and had offered to go with me to the campout. I elected to just skip the event entirely, but as I reflect back on this as an adult, I’m impressed by the sheer generosity of the offer, as this was a big time commitment and he was a busy man with a family of his own. That was just the type of person he was. Marty’s good deeds and the light he created in the world will continue to live on long after his death.

Marty, only God knows how many lives you saved. When many people talk about the Downtown Y, they mention you.

I’m so thankful for Marty’s willingness to share his knowledge and love of the sea and sailing with children. I’ll never forget singing sea shanties complete with hand motions with him and a group of kids! We are so sad that he is gone but grateful that he is with his Savior and no longer in pain. Much love, Heather Hall and Family
