Obituary of Winifred Pryor Cress

Winifred Pryor Cress of Lynchburg, Virginia, died Saturday, June 24th at the Summit, surrounded by family who admired and loved her deeply. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia on November 14, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Beulah Mason Pryor and the wife of the late Cecil Kenneth Cress. Winnie was a 1948 graduate of E.C. Glass High School. She was a member of the Pink Lady Auxiliary for many years and a retired employee of Lynchburg College's Office of Financial Aid. She was also an active member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church where she formerly served as church treasurer. Throughout the years she loved spending time in Blowing Rock, reading, playing Canasta or Dominos with her grandchildren, traveling, going to the movies and never missed an opportunity to join in on a family outing. She was a woman who was amazingly strong and resilient, loved her family deeply and unconditionally and always carried with her fond memories of special friendships, neighbors and co-workers. Her whole life revolved around her faith, family and friends. She is survived by her son, C. Kenneth Cress, Jr. and his wife, Janet Ann of Boone, North Carolina; a daughter, Caryl C. Ramsey and her husband, Joseph E. Ramsey, III of Forest, Virginia; a son-in-law, Randall L. Sayre of Lynchburg, Virginia and seven grandchildren, Matthew C. Sayre and his wife, Phi of Seattle, Washington, Jason A. Sayre of Denver, Colorado, Adam M. Sayre and his wife, Susan of Syracuse, New York, Melanie C. Sayre of Richmond, Virginia, Heather N. Ramsey of Fairfax, Virginia, Savannah L. Ramsey of Forest, Virginia and Holden T. Ramsey of Forest, Virginia. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Cress Sayre and husband, Cecil Kenneth Cress. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 27th in the Fellowship Hall at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church followed by a celebration of Winnie's life and faith in the sanctuary at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bart Edwards and Suzy Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family would like to especially thank the nurses and staff of The Summit for the loving care they gave Winifred.
