With Jim's passing we lost a very dedicated Christian and Bible scholar. Jim was a great student of the Word and could rightly divide the scripture with wonderful passion and common sense. I know he will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy! Michael Justice

There's a saying that's popular right now. You see it on signs, T-shirts, in restaurants, and in homes. You see it so often you might take it for granted or not think about what it means. But this saying sums up my dad.
LAUGH OFTEN, LOVE MUCH, LIVE WELL
If anyone believed in laughing often, it was Dad. He was the king of the pun. We would often groan at his jokes. He enjoyed having fun. Growing up, we never had much money. We didn't take lavish vacations or have any expensive recreational equipment. But Dad found ways to entertain us and taught us to enjoy life—picnics, camping, hiking, visiting family. He even tried to teach me how to sew. Believe me, that caused some laughter!
Dad certainly loved much. We always knew he loved us and cared for us. Because my mom was ill much of her adult life, I think Dad was a bit more involved in child care than most dads of his era. As young children, we knew our parents loved each other and loved us. When Mom died, he mourned for a while, but then he got back into life, finding love again. We saw him extend that love to a new family. He knew loving more people didn't lessen the love you already had for others. He was always showing love to others; always willing to help anyone in need. He had a deep love for the Lord. He lived the greatest commandment- "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." He instilled that love in us. I think of that as the greatest gift he ever gave me.
Dad lived well. He was gentle and patient. He was humble- never seeking accolades or demanding attention. He did his best to live in peace with everyone. He also lived the second commandment of Jesus- "Love your neighbor as yourself." I saw him travel through some dark times but never heard him feel sorry for himself or blame others or God. As his health began to limit what he was able to do, I never heard bitterness or complaining. He found joy in life- in the things he could do instead of dwelling on what he couldn't do. And he continued to laugh often and love much.

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with all of your family. Please give an extra hug to Lonna. I lost my dad 3 years ago and I know how hard is to say goodbye even with the comfort of knowing he has gone on to Paradise and is awaiting the return of Christ just as we are.

Jim was such a good friend to all and was so talented with his hands and building things. There was not much he couldn't do or fix, including putting a new roof on our house with very little help from us. I will miss him greatly.

A stepparent is so much more than just a parent;
Jim made the choice to love when he didn't have to.
God took the strength of a mountain
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comfort in the night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of serenity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined the qualities
When there was nothing more to add
He placed them in my life as Jim
and he became my Dad!!
I love you more than words can say and miss you more each passing day!
Love you, Michelle

Grandad took my dad and me up Peaks of Otter when I was a kid. We had no idea where we were going, but it was a great time. I remember seeing a family of deer up close. That was the first real hike I'd ever done, and we wouldn't have gone if it weren't for grandad. Now I hike whenever I get the chance.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of Jim Shurbet. He was a man of faith and we look forward to seeing him again one day, only this time in God's place of perfect rest and eternal living; where peace and joy and love abound filling every moment with pure righteousness. Such a man will be missed by all who loved him and knew him. This empty hole can only be filled by God's comfort and the support of family and friends. We will pray for all of you.
In Christian love,
Stephen and Lydia Rollins
