Obituary of Martha Oliver Moss

Martha Oliver Moss, 91, died Thursday, May 11, 2017 at The Carrington. Born March 27, 1926, in Charlottesville, VA, Martha was a daughter of the late Emmett Washington Oliver and Blanche Coffey Oliver. She grew up in Tyro VA, and at an early age set out for Lynchburg with her twin sister Mary. She did a variety of jobs in her lifetime including shoe factory worker, seamstress, and her favorite and most important in-home childcare. Martha had many people who loved her and adorned her with special nicknames including "Mossy", "Mott", "Mottie" and "Sis." She was a joy and inspiration to all who met her, and her words "loved everyone". Martha was a member of Elon Baptist Church. She was twice widowed first by Jesse Franklin, and then by her loving husband of 31 years, Gerald Edwin Moss; one brother, Beverley Oliver and one sister, Madeline O'Brien. Martha is survived by three children; Travis E. Moss (Tammy), Abby M. Childress (Jack) all of Madison Heights, Geraldine M. Roakes (Scott) of Moundville, AL; four grandchildren, Matthew (Megan), Russell and Reggie Roakes and Christopher Beck; two great-grandchildren, Jake & Owen Roakes and her twin sister, Mary A. Turman. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews including special nieces; Betty, Joan & Nancy as well as numerous children she watched through the years. The family would like to thank the special caregivers of the Oddfellows Home and The Carrington who showered her with love and care. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at the Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory Wiggington Rd. Chapel (434) 385-8900. The Rev. Steve Tyree and the Rev. Don Bailey will co-officiate. Family and friends are welcome at the funeral home on Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
