Obituary of Joel Smith

Joel Watkins Smith, Sr., 77, of Forest passed away Monday, February 11, 2013 at his residence. Born in Appomattox County on January 30, 1936 he was a son of the late Charles Roland Smith and Carrie Martin Smith and was the husband of Dorothy C. Smith. Mr. Smith served his country in the U. S. Army. He was retired from Babcock and Wilcox, where he worked as a machinist and was a member of Living Word Baptist Church and the Woodman of the World. He also loved to work in his yard. In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by his first wife, Shirley B. Smith. One son, Joel W. Smith, Jr. of Forest. A step son, Thomas Moon and his wife, Sandy of Lynchburg. Two step daughters, Sandy Wright and her fiancé, David Dillard of Bedford County and Kelli Worsham and her husband, Douglas Worsham, Jr. of Forest. Four step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren, A brother, Ralph Smith and his wife, Phyllis of Appomattox. A sister, Daphine Moore and her husband, Curtis of Lynchburg. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Ronnie Wright. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. A Celebration of Joel?s Life will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. Marvin Suitt officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at the funeral home. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the Humane Society.
