Obituary of Robert Ernest Hicks

Robert Ernest Hicks, Jr., 85, of Evington, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013 at his home after an extended illness. He was the husband of Connell Seckman Hicks. Born February 12, 1928 in Beckley,WVa, he was a son of the late Robert Ernest and Iva Kelly Hicks. He is a two year veteran of the United States Navy, attended Concord College, received a B.S. degree in 1953 from VPI (VaTech) and a M.S. Ed. Degree from UVA in 1962. Prior to 17 years as a teacher and principal in various schools in Campbell County, he had short stints as Asst. County Agent of Culpeper County. He was also owner of Hicks Feed and Seed in Bedford and active in the farming community. His last 20 years before retiring in 1996 was Commissioner of Revenue for Campbell County. He was also treasurer of Campbell County Rescue Squad since man trespassed on the moon in the late 1960's until just a few years ago. He volunteered at Lynchburg General Hospital for twelve years. He was a member, deacon and elder of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Connell Seckman Hicks; one son, Robert E. Hicks , III and his wife, Cody, of Atlanta, GA; a stepson, Mark Friend of Evington, VA; one brother, William Kelly Hicks and his wife, Kyra, of Edenton, NC; one grandchild, Robert Ernest Hicks, IV; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Hicks Crossan. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Chuck Willoughby officiating. A reception and visitation period will be held immediately after the service at the church. Burial will be held in Fort Hill Memorial Park on Tuesday at 10:00 AM.
