Obituary of Janie Howard Hamilton

Janie Howard Hamilton, 93, of Williamsburg, Virginia (formerly of Lynchburg, VA), died on Thursday morning July 18, 2013. She was born on October 7, 1919, in Goode, Bedford County, VA as the fourth daughter of David Royal and Mary Rives Layne Howard. Janie is preceded in death by her husband, William Leonard Hamilton; a sister, Frances H. Turner; four brothers - Warren David Howard, Louis Clayton Howard Sr., George Eldridge Howard, and Everett Odell Howard. Janie has two surviving sisters - Virginia H. Henley of Clinton, SC and Elizabeth H. Harris of Richmond, VA; a sister-in-law Virginia A. Howard of Madison Heights, VA; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Janie has two married sons and four grandchildren: Bill and Ann Marie Hamilton of Williamsburg VA, their daughter Leigh and son Andrew; John and Pam Hamilton of Newark, DE, their sons Christopher of Arlington VA, and Steven of Charlotte NC (all formerly of Richmond, VA). After graduating from Boonsboro High School, Janie struck out to see the world. She attended college in Richmond, VA before joining the Department of the Navy as a civilian employee. This ultimately took her to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she met her husband Bill in 1954; they were married on April 2, 1955. In 1962, the Hamilton family moved to Lynchburg VA, where Janie and Bill raised their children. Janie and Bill were both avid golfers and excellent bridge players. Janie began a second career at Miller & Rhoads, where she worked from 1972 to 1986. Janie was a member of First Presbyterian Church. A celebration of Janie's life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, July 22, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg; with a Visitation beginning at 10:00 am. A graveside service will follow at the Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery at 104 Walnut Hollow Road.
