Obituary of John Thomas Mason

John Thomas "Tommy" Mason, 79, of Ashland, VA, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at his home. Born October 24, 1933, in Lynchburg, VA, he was a son of the late Alexander Ashby and Mary Elizabeth Mason. Tommy served in both the United States Marines (1951-1971 and United States Navy (1971-1982 with 31 years of total service to our country. He served in both Korea (1952-1955) and Vietnam (1966-1967). After his military retirement, he owned and operated a bar in Florida, a convenience store in Virginia and finally retired to his RV in Hanover County and enjoyed the solitude of his life. He is survived by a daughter, Sarah Mason Maxey and her husband, Andy, of Henrico, VA and three sons, John Thomas Mason, Jr. of Lynchburg, VA, Mark Mason of Roanoke, VA, and Keith Mason of Henrico, VA; one sister, Sarah Mason Etheridge of Lorton, VA; two brothers, Henry A. Mason of Richmond and James Edward Mason of Ashland, VA; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Danny Mason; one sister, Nellie Mason Black; four brothers, William Walker Mason, John Howard Mason, George Jack Mason and Charles Alexander Mason A memorial service with military honors will be held Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Woody's Funeral Home -Parham Chapel in Richmond with his nephew, the Rev. Dan G. Mason officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in the Spring. Diuguid Funeral Service-Wiggington Chapel (434-385-8900) is serving the family.
