John Sellick, Jr.

Obituary of John Lewis Sellick, Jr.

Mr. John L. Sellick, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2018 at his home. He was born on March 19, 1930 to the late John and Florence Sellick in Hillside, New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Lawlor of Arizona.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 62 years, Margaret Jenks Sellick; Daughter Sarah Meyer, husband Glenn of Lynchburg; Daughter Martha Link, husband Ken of Fredericksburg, VA; son John Sellick, wife Debra of Lynchburg. Also surviving are two sisters, Joan Hunziker and Patricia Beaudoin, husband Bob, both of New Jersey. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Alexander Sellick, Ryan Fulcher, Jacob & Emily Margaret Link and Austin Sellick and five great-grandchildren.

He was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College and served in the US Army, Korean War. He worked for J.L. Hammett School Supply Company for 40+ years, first as a salesman covering VA-NC-MD and then as a Distribution Branch Manager both in Union, New Jersey and in Lynchburg, Virginia.

He loved his family, friends, community and First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, an Elder and as Treasurer involving many functions of the church; he also enjoyed teaching Sunday School with his wife; he was on the Board of Directors at the First Presbyterian Cemetery; he was a dedicated volunteer at Virginia Baptist Hospital and Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center for many years.

He will be remembered for his kind, caring ways of staying in touch with family and special friends. This togetherness was something he cherished and truly enjoyed. He was very accepting and connected with many people. No doubt his hobby was photography, along with following his favorite sport teams; NY Yankees, NY Giants and everything UVA. His adventurous spirit came alive on board the boat “FREE SPIRIT” with his special friend Alan Meilinger and others, where he was the head Chef and enjoyed the comraderie along the waterways they traveled. There is so much more that could be said…the people who knew him will find it easy to read between the lines.
