Obituary of Roberta Corlett Sugden

Roberta "Sis" Jean Corlett Sugden ,91, of Lynchburg, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2008 in Lynchburg General Hospital after an extended illness. She was the widow of the late John Sugden. Born March 29, 1917, in Pittsford, MI, she was a daughter of the late Meryl and Aimee Browning Corlett. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active in Virginia Masters Swimming and women's philanthropic organizations, P.E.O. Roberta was passionate about her artwork, completing many beautiful pieces depicting woodland scenery around her lovely home. Several watercolor paintings were accepted into local juried art shows, She received her BA degree from the former Randolph Macon-Woman's College and BFA from Western Michigan University. In 2003, she was inducted into the Lynchburg Area Sports Hall of Fame. The Academy of Women honored Roberta as the recipient of the award for Outstanding Woman in the field of athletics. She is survived by one son, John Sugden ,of Leesburg, VA; three daughters, Aimee Chester, Richland, MI, Mary Bartha of Pompton Lakes, NJ and Virginia "Ginny" Darcey of Mooresville, NC; ten grandchildren; John William Sugden, Jennifer Richey, Aimee Chester, William Chester, Katie Bartha, Jean Bartha, Molly Bartha, Sarah Bartha, Charlie and Clayton Darcey; one great-grandchild, Delilah Richey; one sister, Marjorie Dillard of Lynchburg. A private graveside service will be held Monday, June 30, 2008 in Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. John Scholer officiating. A visitation and reception for family and friends will follow at Sis's beloved home from 12-2 PM. Memorials may be made to the YMCA of Central Virginia, 1315 Church Street, Lynchburg, VA 24505.
