Obituary of Byron Kirkman

Byron J. Kirkman, 92 , of Richmond, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008. He was the husband of the late Mary Magdalene Rickenbach Kirkman. Born April 14, 1916 in Twin Falls, Idaho, he was a son of the late George Quincy and Mary Magdalene Rickenbach Kirkman. After finishing high school in Twin Falls, Byron joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. Having been a great experience, it influenced him to enlist in the Army in 1936, In 1945, while being stationed in Virginia, Byron met Edith Thorpe. They were married January 11, 1946. He served his country in peace and war, serving both in World War II and the Korean war, receiving many decorations and service medals. Byron retired as a Chief Warrant Officer from a long military career in 1956. He then worked as an accountant, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Richmond. He is survived by his nieces and nephew. In addition to his late wife Edith, he was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. A graveside service will be held Friday at 1:00 PM in Spring Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Dan G. Mason officiating. Military honors will be provided by Lynchburg's American Legion -Post 16. A visitation will be held Thursday from 7-8:30 pm at Diuguid Wiggington Chapel. Diuguid Funeral Service-Wiggington Chapel (385-8900) is serving the family.
