Obituary of George Sumpter

George Hamilton Sumpter, Jr., 84 , of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2008 in Lynchburg General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Octavia Louise White Sumpter for 59 years. Born June 14, 1924 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late George Hamilton Sumpter and Alice Amanda Davis Sumpter. Mr. Sumpter was a retired bookkeeper and a member of Leesville Road Baptist Church. He was a United States Army veteran of WW-II, having proudly served in the European Theatre. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, George Hamilton Sumpter, III and his wife Carolyn; one daughter, Amanda Shirey, all of Lynchburg. He is also survived by six grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother , Charles Byrd Sumpter and one sister, Virginia Sumpter Lawson. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 11:00 AM in Leesville Road Baptist Church with the Rev. Carl Diemer officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 PM at the funeral home and at the home of his son George Sumpter III, 656 Jefferson Drive at other times. Interment will be in Forest Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors by Lynchburg's American Legion Post -16.
