Obituary of Helen Waddell

Helen Porter Waddell, 98 of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, October 20, 2008 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Samuel James Waddell, Sr. and mother of the late John P. Waddell and the step-mother of Samuel J. Waddell , Jr. of New York City. Born April 28, 1910 in Lynchburg , she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Ada Oliver Porter, She was a member of College Hill Baptist Church, the Mayflower Society and had many interests including the collection and selling of antiques, raising a variety of orchids and was dedicated to the love and welfare of animals. In her younger years , she was a model for an agency in Miami, FL and worked in the fashion and cosmetic department of Hecht's Department Store in Baltimore. Her husband was a descendant of the family that founded the "Pony Express". Helen is also survived by seven grandchildren; Dr. Christine M. Label of Santa Cruz, CA, John P. Waddell of Miami, Fl, Marcia Ann Brazil also of Miami, FL, Alice Mary Rose of Fairview, NC, Barry Anthony Waddell of Fort. Myers, FL and Veronica Paula Dodd of Miami, FL; a nephew, Ambrose and his wife Mary Harris family from West Virginia; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Helen's very special caregiver, Elaine Dameron, her friend and nurse as well as other staff from Hospice of the Hills for their loving and dedicated care. The family also wishes to thank her friends at Mitchell's Store for their wonderful personal service to Helen. A celebration of Helen's life will be held Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 11:00 AM in Diuguid Wiggington Chapel (811 Wiggington Rd.) with the Rev. Andrew Grose and Frank Mashburn officiating. Interment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Helen would deeply appreciate all contributions be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society, 3305 Naval Reserve Rd., Lynchburg, VA 24501 "to help the little animals". Diuguid Funeral Service-Wiggington Chapel (385-8900) is serving the family.
