Obituary of Eleanor Falls
Eleanor Callahan Falls of Forest, VA died peacefully in her
sleep on January 25, 2009. She now
resides with her beloved husband and youngest son in a better place. She is survived by her son James
Elery Falls, Jr.
and his wife Nancy; their daughter Stacey Falls McCray; her other living son Randall
Keith Falls
and his wife Kathleen; and their sons Randall, Jr., William F. and James A.
Falls. She was predeceased by her
husband James Elery
Falls and her son Gregory
Ray Falls.
Eleanor was born in Forest on February
23, 1923 to the late Luther Lee Callahan and Nannie Tinsley Callahan. She graduated from New
London Academy in
1940. She married Elery on July 26, 1941
and contributed to the war effort at home while he fought in the European
Theater. They settled in Lynchburg
after the war and started their family.
In 1961, they moved back to the country.
In 1963 Eleanor began working for Dr. William O. McCabe as
he established the first physician's practice in the then farming community of Forest. She worked there over the years in various
capacities as the practice grew, retiring for a time to care for Elery in the
years before his death. After he passed,
she returned to work as the transcriptionist for Dr. John Carmack and continued
this up until her death. She was a woman
of many talents, but "Mrs. Eleanor's" forte was typing. She could make a keyboard sing.
She was a member of the Love Center Sunday School and Lakewood
Baptist Church. Her faith was enduring and she was not
intimidated by her mortality.
Eleanor's legacy is that all who got to know her grew to
love her. She was an intelligent women
and caring, nurturing mother who literally held the family together after the
death of her youngest son at age 10. She
loved life and departed it on her own terms.
In addition to her blood relatives, she leaves behind a loving extended
family at Forest Family Physicians and Lakewood
Baptist Church. The family would like to extend special
thanks to Dr. William McCabe, Dr. John Carmack, the reverend Dan Manley and
Becky Truxell.
The family will receive visitors from 3:00 to 6:00 pm on
Tuesday, January 27th at the Diuguid Waterlick Chapel. A celebration of her life will take place on
Wednesday, January 28th at 11:00 am at Lakewood
Baptist Church. Interment will be private at Virginia
Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lakewood
Baptist Church
or the Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Home.
