Obituary of Julia Smith
Julia Mallory Smith died March 10, 2009 at The Medical Care Center. Born in Lawrenceville, Va., March 14, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Frank Nicholson Mallory and Juanita
Hall Mallory. Mrs. Smith attended The College of William and Mary and was a
member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Among her many accomplishments, she served
as Woman's Page Editor of The Lynchburg News, Adult Program Director of the
YWCA, and Assistant Director and Board Member of the American Cancer Society in
Lynchburg. She also served as President of the Lynchburg Woman's Club and for
many years was an active volunteer at Virginia Baptist Hospital
and in the office at St.
John's Episcopal Church
where she was a member.
She was preceded in
death by her husband, Delbert Parks Smith, and her son, Frank Mallory Bowler.
She also was predeceased by a sister, Mason Mallory Lykes of Tampa, Fla. She is survived by her
daughters, Julia Mallory Hall and husband Millard Preston Hall, Jr. of
Martinsville, Va., and Ellen Bowler Cox and husband Alan Richard Cox of
Winston-Salem, N.C., a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Paris Bowler Marks of
Lynchburg, 10 grandchildren, Charles Warren Bowler, Elizabeth Bowler McNeer,
Catherine Bowler Hazen, Mary Bruce Bowler, Millard Preston Hall, III, Robert
Bradley Hall, Sarah Mallory Hall DeSantis, Alan Richard Cox, Jr., Elizabeth
Mason Cox and Caroline Mallory Cox, five great-grandchildren and numerous
nieces and nephews, and a dear friend, Donald B. Brah of Lynchburg. She will be
missed by her many friends, neighbors and bridge partners.
The family wishes to
express gratitude to the staff at the Medical Care Center, Gentle Shepard
Hospice, and especially to her devoted caregivers who became her extended
family, Marion Brown, Dixie Cooper, Mitzi Tomlin, and Sharon Wilson.
In lieu of flowers,
memorials are encouraged for St. John's Episcopal Church, 200 Boston Ave. Lynchburg, VA 24503, the Lynchburg Chapter
of the American Cancer Society, 2316 Atherholt Rd. Lynchburg, VA 24501, or Gentle Shepherd
Hospice, 6045 Peters Creek Rd. Roanoke, VA 24019.
A memorial service will
be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 2:00 PM Saturday, March 14. The family will receive
friends at a reception following the memorial service.
