Obituary of Samuel Woodell Elliott

Samuel Woodell Elliott Samuel Woodell Elliott,86, of Lynchburg, died Sunday July 30, 2017 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Phyllis Waugh Elliott. Born May 3, 1931 in Riceville, Va., he was a son of the late Perry Arthur and Marion Betterton Elliott. Woody grew up in Campbell County, VA. He graduated from Gladys High School, attended the University of Richmond and received his B.A. in Education and Religious Studies and master's degree in Education from Lynchburg College. He spent most of his career as a Teacher, Assistant Principal and Visiting Teacher/School Social Worker in Campbell County schools. He was president of the Campbell County Education Association, was on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Education Association and was a delegate to many of the National Education Association conventions. He also spent summers as Director of the school census and working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He served as the Pastor of Bethel Baptist Church for 30 years and previously was the Pastor of Mount Hermon and Winfall Baptist Churches. He also served interim Pastorates in Lynchburg and several Baptist Churches in Amherst County. Woody loved to fish and read and enjoyed a "good story", music, gardening and sports of all kinds. He played baseball in highschool, college and the Appalachian League. He was a basketball coach at Oak Hill Academy, the Commissioner of Campbell County Little League Football and a softball and baseball official for many years. Woody and Phyllis met in the choir at Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church and were married there on June 13, 1954. He never met a stranger. Woody and Phyllis enjoyed traveling and had been to all of the U.S.A., most of Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Southeast Asia. Woody leaves three children; Stephen W. Elliott, Susan E. Lees and Sarah Beth Elliott, seven grandchildren; Natasha, Stephen John, Brittany, Jamie, Joey, Taylor and Trevor; and five great-grandchildren; Gabbie, Taj, Chance, Charlotte and Gunner. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at Diuguid Wiggington Chapel. Burial will follow at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery, Winfall, VA. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00-7:30 PM at the funeral home. Diuguid Funeral Service & Crematory, Wiggington Road Chapel is serving the family.  
