Obituary of Lanny Edward Johnson

Lanny Edward Johnson, 69, of Forest, VA, passed away Monday, October 16, 2017, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born September 14, 1948 in Iowa City, Iowa, he was a son of the late Glen and Dorothy Johnson. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School in New Bedford, MA and later received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from University of Iowa. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He also served in the Army National Guard, after which he began a career in the emerging field of computer programming. He worked for various companies and later retired from Wachovia Bank as a manager of computer programing. He loved the outdoors and was an avid landscaper and gardener. He also played various sports such as tennis, golf and basketball. He had a great interest in the physical sciences, especially astronomy and archaeology as evidenced by his meteorite and artifact collections. Above all things, Lanny valued his family. He is survived by two daughters, Sister Aleydis (Keri) Johnson of Wisconsin and Tina Johnson of Bedford, VA; one brother, Gary Johnson and his wife, Lillian, of Oklahoma; two grandsons, Kaleb Johnson and Jeremiah Johnson both of Bedford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Lanny Edward Johnson Family Perpetual Charity Fund, C/O The Estate of Lanny Johnson, 943 Smith St., Bedford, VA 24523. A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at 12:00 Noon Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church with Monsignor Michael McCarron officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 5-7 P.M. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.
