Obituary of Nancy Burks Freeman

Nancy Burks Freeman, 74, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 10, 2018. She was born June 25, 1943 to the late Camm Zachariah (Pete) and Ethel Johnson Burks. Nancy grew up in Amherst, VA where she met her future husband, Carroll Freeman in High School. She graduated from Madison College and Lynchburg College with BA and ME degrees, respectively. Nancy taught 6th grade at Monroe elementary before becoming a stay-at-home mother after marrying Carroll in 1967. Nancy and Carroll were members of Rivermont Presbyterian Church where Nancy supported Carroll as a Deacon and Elder. Nancy took tremendous pride and joy in her children's activities from dance and piano recitals to guitar and band practice. Nancy and Carroll lived all of their lives in Central Virginia and virtually all of their adult lives in Lynchburg, with Carroll predeceasing Nancy by 14 years. Nancy suffered from a long illness and is now at peace. Nancy and Carroll leave behind two children, Camm Schamp (husband Tom) of Dallas, TX and Woodford Freeman (wife Kelly) of Charlottesville, VA, and five grandchildren Zach, Ben, and Sarah of Texas and Adelyn and Lexie of Charlottesville. Nancy also leaves behind her brother Elkin Burks of Chesapeake, VA who supported her throughout her life. A graveside service will be held at Fort Hill Memorial Park on Tuesday, March 13 at 1:00 PM with the Rev. Wayne Meredith officiating.
