ESTHER PUGH WHEELER Esther Pugh Wheeler, 95, of Roanoke died Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at Pheasant Ridge Nursing Facility. Born in Charlotte County on April 9, 1912 she was a daughter of the late Hugh Alexander Pugh and Annie Andrews Pugh and was the widow of Bennie Lawrence Mrs. Wheeler attended Longwood College and was a graduate of Lynchburg College. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and a long time member of Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church. She retired after 39 years of teaching 7th. grade mainly for the Campbell County School System. She considered every child she cared for as a special gift. Mrs. Wheeler also gave a lot of her time as a volunteer for Virginia Baptist Hospital. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy W. Farthing of Roanoke. Two sisters, Katherine Wilkinson and Jeanne Ramsey. Two grandsons, Samuel Lee Farthing and his wife, Ioana of Roanoke and Dr. William Howell Farthing, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn of Kingsport, TN. Five great grandchildren, Matt, Christopher, Heather, Georgia, Jacqueline and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ryland Pugh and a son-in-law, Dr. William Howell Farthing. A celebration of Esther's life will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, September 15, 2007 at Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Cory Ingold officiating. Interment will be private. A reception for family and friends will take place at the church following the service. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church, 5810 Fort Ave., Lynchburg, Va. 24502. Condolences may be sent to www.diuguidfuneralservice.com.
