Obituary of Virginia Buckley

Virginia North Buckley passed away on Saturday December 21, 2007. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John Edward Buckley. Born July 5, 1914 in Lynchburg she was the daughter of the late Charles Richard North and Louise Davis North. Her great interest was in education and in the cultural life of Lynchburg. Her degree was from Lynchburg College with graduate work from William and Mary College. Her teaching began in Brookneal and she taught 4th grade for many years in the Lynchburg Public Schools until her retirement. She was on the committee to save Jones Memorial Library at its original location. When the steeple of First Baptist Church of Lynchburg fell and greatly damaged the church, she joined members to have it restored to its original beauty. She supported the restoration of the Academy Theatre, an early opera house to its original beauty. She was a member of the Lynchburg Woman's Club, the Lynchburg Chapter of the Daughters' of the American Revolution, a board member of the Auxiliary of Virginia Baptist Hospital, a member of Oakwood Country Club, a member of the Historical Society and a member of the Dellwood Garden Club. She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Lynchburg where she taught Sunday school and served in other capacities In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, John E. Buckley, Jr. and his wife Nancy Yount Buckley and two beloved grandchildren, Helen Amanda Buckley and John E. Buckley III. She is also survived by one brother, Temple R. North. A memorial service will be held at the Diuguid Funeral Chapel at 811 Wiggington Road at 2:00 PM on Wednesday. Dec. 26th by the Reverend Robert Brubaker with the internment at 10:00 am on Thursday Dec. 27th in Spring Hill Cemetery.
