Obituary of Yalcin Kaya Tokgozoglu

Yalcin Kaya Tokgozoglu, 63, of Lynchburg, passed away Monday, May 13, 2024, at Lynchburg General Hospital after a sudden illness. He was the husband of Laura Voykin Tokgozoglu.

Born in Wichita, Kansas, on November 3, 1960, he was a son of the late Nejat and Coleeta Tokgozoglu. He moved to Ankara, Turkey at age 4 and returned to the States when he was 17. He attended Kansas University where he earned his double masters in Soviet & East European Studies. He went to Indiana University where he pursued a PhD in Central Eurasian Studies, ABD. After graduating, he worked at Radio Liberty in Munich, Germany. When he returned to the states he began a 25 year career at The Department Of Defense where he was a valued employee. He retired in January and moved to Lynchburg this year and enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughters and granddaughter, while also visiting his son in Missouri. He spent many relaxing hours watching the various geese, ducks, and birds at his new lake front home.

He loved cooking and serving friends authentic Turkish meals. He had a playful sense of humor. He loved to travel, especially to historical sites. He loved music and art, he would often be found in the evenings listening to Chopin. He loved gardening and roses were his favorite flower. He made a meticulous cup of tea. He loved soccer, especially Lionel Messi. He was a black belt in Judo and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He had many hobbies including painting, drawing, and wood carving. He was an avid reader and history buff which led him to learn seven languages. He was a friend to cats, dogs, and all little creatures. But his greatest joy was his family.

He is survived by his wife, Laura; one son, Paul Nejat Tokgozoglu (Jessie) of Houston, MO; two daughters, Lydia C. Hubbard (Aaron) and Bethany Tokgozoglu, all of Lynchburg, VA; two brothers, Mazhar Tokgozoglu (Lale) of Turkey and Melih Tokgozoglu (Giselle) of Olanthe, KS; one grandchild, Evelyn Hubbard; two step grandchildren, Audie and Edison Charboneau. He was predeceased by his brother Suat Tokgozoglu.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 3:00 P.M. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with Pastor Kenny Longo officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the funeral home.
